If You Love Something…

Now that the interwebs are mostly over the sophmoric jokes about Apple’s latest offering, it’s time to get serious. I believe that Apple may finally be up against the wall, and if we’re not there quite yet the time is fast approaching. There’s a special level of hell a person goes through when they lose their faith in a person or thing that they truly believed in. The last time I went through this George Lucas was busily carving up my most beloved childhood fable with all the surgical skill of a blunt axe. I got older and a little more jaded and thought myself proof against such betrayals. In a way this is true, or perhaps it’s just the nature in which Apple has progressively worn me down. Oh, yes, I was a most ardent evangelist for the Macintosh operating system and hardware. I still have the very first issue of MacAddict and subscribed faithfully for years. Something happened though, and while I can’t pinpoint the exact moment, I can count the series of little straws that proverbially broke the camels back. Read the rest of this entry »
Micro Reviews
I should have used the time during the DC snowpocalypse to catch up on writing. Obviously, I didn’t. I had started a draft of reviews on a round of rentals I had recently partaken in, but it seems WP ate my homework. I just haven’t had the willpower to rewrite it. TerMEHnator Salvation
I want to start by saying that I really expected very little from this film. Reading some form of review after the theatrical release was almost unavoidable, and at best the reviews were uncomplimentary. Supposedly I had seen all there was to see of the major action sequences through the trailers, therefore seeing it on the screen didn’t seem as important to me. Herein lies the problem with reviews, putting too much stock in another persons opinions can lead to regret. Expectations are a tricky thing and I believe there were almost unrealistically high hopes for Salvation. It seems to me now that the reviews were based more on what the reviewer wanted from the film rather than what was presented. Though perhaps by generating a negative expectation I could enjoy the movie for what it was. Read the rest of this entry »
Inglorious Basterds – Meh
Over the holidays I got to spend a little time catching up on recent releases. We don’t get to the theater too often for one reason or another. At $10 a ticket I have to deem the movie worthy of seeing on the big screen. Usually big special effects are my primary requirement which scratches just about anything other than an action flick. Sorry, but a close up of George Clooney is just as dreamy on my tv as it is on a 30 foot screen. I digress. I had been looking forward to seeing Inglorious Basterds since saw the first trailer. My intention was to see it on the big screen, it looked like quite a spectacle. I love war movies for the hero element that so often permeates the genre. The stories of ordinary men doing extraordinary things for the sake of some ideal greater than themselves, what can I say, I’m a sucker for the noble ideal. From the trailers I was expecting something akin to Kelly’s Heroes meets The Dirty Dozen meets Band of Brothers. Sadly, I expected too much. Read the rest of this entry »
