In Which I Reconsider Quantity Over Quality
To be fair it hasn’t really seemed like four months since I last wrote. That’s not entirely true. There was this draft about Colbert visiting the Hill, but it didn’t come out right. Delete. In my defense, I’ve been a little busy. You see, there was this wedding thing in August which led right into being notified that the place we were renting had been foreclosed upon. Swell. We had a little over a month to find a new place, pack up our junk, and move. Through what can only be divine intervention and a lot of family support, we got it done, and we are mostly unboxed and ensconced in our new lair. It’s a bigger place and has a garage which has already been dubbed storage. I would have to park across the street anyways as there’s only enough room for one car. A general sense of excitement can be attributed to having a deck which means I may now don some barbecue mitts and wreak flaming havoc on unsuspecting meat. All in all, it could be worse. Wait did I mention I need a new job? Yes during the great house debacle, our team members were delivered “reduction in work force” letters. Granted there has been a stay of execution, but the day looms ever closer. There have been some leads and a couple of interviews, but no word yet. Read the rest of this entry »
Binge and Purge
Lately the lions share of my time has been focused on some freelance work of rebuilding a corporate website. Now that the project is mostly completed, I spent a weekend in a quasi-coma and feel mostly ready to face the world again. I feel like I’ve missed out on a lot. Generally I’m a lot more active in keeping up with a couple of forums I visit with regularity, and certainly my beta accounts have suffered negligence. Due to my seclusion, the wife and I have gotten a little behind on our movie merriment. Though it seems most of our watching comes in a glut of self-induced double or triple features. On the one hand it makes for easy contrasting between films; on the other it makes it a near impossibility to absorb much of what you’ve seen. This might not be the detriment that it might seem. I don’t think that any amount of analysis would have helped me appreciate The Informant. However, I find Zombieland all the more memorable because the other films were so forgettable. Facebook Farce
Posted by Jak in Technology, Web on May 26, 2010
The recent wave of news about Facebook has really touched a nerve with me. There was that email fiasco just last month, and more recently the news of open graph. I’m not the only one to see the potential for pure and unmitigated evil, and there is no indication that it will get any better. The future of online social media is grim. What really irks me is that it doesn’t have to be. As a long standing member I remember the requirement for a .edu or alumni email address just to participate in facebook. Things were much different then. Sure there were some apps and basic games, but over all it was a fairly sparsely populated service, and I liked it that way. Sure there wasn’t the access to as many of my friends as now, but there was something pristine and cultured about the site. Facebook was indie and cool. Then in a very short amount of time it turned into Myspace. Yes, I had a Myspace account, but I never could get past the juvenile idiocy that ran rampant through that community. I hated that every other page was fully of animated gifs and sparkletastic backgrounds. It was like having a group of tween girls kirked out on a sugar high assaulting every sense with glitter and cheap accessories from Spencers. Sadly this is the drain I see Facebook precipitously circling with one exception. Read the rest of this entry »
Kids Don’t Try This At Home
I recently learned that several of my readers are for the lack of a better description, tweens. Sorry if this offends you. I’m not really sure how to take this news. Don’t get me wrong; I’m deliriously happy that anyone would want to read this drivel. Yet I can’t but help feeling some misgivings. I’ve tried to maintain my humor at a representable level, but suddenly I find myself worrying about any expletives I’ve scattered about like so many antiquated landmines. It’s just a matter of time before one explodes. Read the rest of this entry »
