Is DDO the new MMO WTG?
Turbine just released their new subscription programs for Dungeons and Dragons Online. I have to admit I tried it a while back and found the controls felt familiar and it was pretty easy to get up and going. Combat was good, the only thing I didn’t like was that it felt empty. With their new scheme this could change. You have Free, Premium and VIP. Basically Free is what you might expect. You have to purchase additional content to play it, you automagically are upgraded to Premium just for purchasing something with your turbine points whether that be a dungeon unlock or an extra NPC hireling. VIP gives you access to everything for the cost of a monthly subscription fee. A more detailed breakdown is found here.
This could go either way in my opinion. One thing I hate about these online stores is the advantage kids with far too much disposable income attain through purchasing upgrades. It takes away any feeling of accomplishment. I get the feeling though that the idea here is access to content rather than gearing up a toon for PvP pwnage. If this becomes a successful business model do you think other companies might consider the same format? Blizzard isn’t suffering from a lack of subscriber base but perhaps this might help other struggling MMOs level the playing field by allowing a broader range of players to try before the buy?
All in Wonder
Just a few things that don’t warrant an entire post of their own. First on Tuesday night Surviving Disaster premiered on Spike TV. I missed it and caught it on Wednesday but what a freakin’ awesome show!!! Cade Courtley may be my new personal hero. They are streaming the full episode from the website (no embeds sorry) so go check it out, you’ll thank me. Next week: Inferno!
Something which has bothered me for a long time is pedestrian foot traffic. People need to follow normal traffic rules when they’re walking through hallways or shopping areas. Visualize lanes and stay in yours! This always drives me crazy when at the grocery store. While you’re at it don’t block an intersection and slower traffic stay to the right. With this in mind I was walking back to my office approaching a double door. I went to the right side door and began to open only to bump into some lady who was opening the door from the other side. She gave me a curdled “Sorry” and I apologized even though I should have had the right of way. Perhaps I expect too much.
In other news I’m really hoping to get in on the Star Trek Online Closed Beta. I’m having some MMO withdrawal, but not enough to go back to WoW yet
House of M…
M for Mickey that is. They just picked up Marvel’s IP for a cool $4 billion in stock and cash. Both companies appear optimistic but I’m not so sure this is going to be such a great thing. Will Disney require that the comics take a more family friendly line? Official press release can be found here.
Your Turpitude is showing
For some reason I had the word turpitude on the brain. Sometimes I find myself rolling words and phrases in my head that are contextually correct, however if you were to ask me the exact definition I’d have to look it up. I found the wikipedia article on moral turpitude amusing. Basically as long as you don’t intend an act of outright malicious evil, no one will think any worse of you. You will probably still go to jail, but hey, at least your character is safe right?
Learning!
So this week I have engaged in Actionscript training and it’s blowing my mind! Everything I had wanted to do and couldn’t figure out how, I’m learning how to do! This is great, provided I can remember what I have learned in 3 days time.
