…though you could hardly call me a butterfly; the similarities end at the expression. I don’t know that you could describe me as social either. Two months without a post? Ridiculous. I have been doing things though. Look there’s a Faceborg widget on the site now! I owe my friend Ranvis for the requisite number of Likes to get a real page name. You know, instead of some ambiguous alphanumeric gobbledygook like www.facebook.com/uR461An7L053r. I think that might have actually been my identifier prior to the proof of 25 friends! You have to hand it to the man who hijacked his friends accounts; thanks Ranvis! I have threatened my own friends on Faceborg that they won’t receive my witty updates unless they “Like” Nerdtopia, since I switched my twitter feed to stream to the Nerdtopia Faceborg page instead of my personal page. Their loss!I blame my recent lapse partially on the new job. There’s really no downtime during the day to write, and when I get home the last thing I want to do is write. Instead I have been venting frustrations in League of Legends battles. I am slowly advancing from Nub status, though I’m only any good with Ashe. I have an affinity for ranged classes, especially archers. I’m not a horrible marksman in my own rights so perhaps that’s the draw for me. I’m still trying to keep up my twitching with a few rounds of Counterstrike every week. Our server got hacked a couple of weeks ago so I have been slowly trying to put Humpty Dumpty back together again. I have reached critical mass with WoW, and despite my cohort clamoring for us to guild up, the magic is fading. This isn’t a bad thing, and I knew it would happen as it always does. I just wish it would have happened when I didn’t still have two months left on my subscription. Figures.
The other reason for my slip is that whenever I sit to write, I run headfirst into a wall. I have great opening lines, but no story seems to unfold from there. I think I leap too quickly to figure out a twist or how it will end instead of letting the process flow naturally. I’ve read all sorts of articles and advice from writers on how to craft their prose, but I think the muse is individual. Everyone does it a little differently. I think as a writer the greatest disservice to your craft is to try to force yourself into using someone else’s process. Do I want to gain a readership? You betcha, but it’s not going to happen by trying to emulate all the great authors I enjoy reading.
So over the summer I’m going to force myself to make some time to write. I don’t know that anything will come of it, but I will share what does. In the meanwhile, I’m going to make a commitment to at least a weekly post here. If there are more…that will be awesome. I want to try and do some more tech pieces or perhaps more gaming. I have this idea that I might be able to foist some pieces off to Gawker on one of my favorites. I’m also hoping to add a writer or two if only on an occasional basis.
