I have such varied musical tastes. Generally I gravitate towards rock but most anything with a good beat will draw me. Lately I’ve been listening to Muse and they are rapidly becoming one of my favorite bands. While the music maintains a thematic sound from the beginning of an album to the end, there is a broad range of stylistic differences in each song. Some have a simple rock ballad feel while others merge grinding guitar riffs with sweeping electric orchestras. Pieces like Knights of Cydonia conjure images of a grand epic in which I envision a Leiji Matsumoto space opera. Quite simply they fit just about any mood I’m in and generally elevate me out of any funk I might be in. Which isn’t to say this is all I’ve been listening to. I’ve been judiciously using the genius function on my Nano and generally get a great mix of Jamiroquai, Robbie Williams, Imogen Heap, and Mute Math to name just a few.
My wife is the true audiophile in our home and she brings a lot more to the table than I do as far as music is concerned, but our tastes don’t always overlap. We do both tend to avoid the mainstream and like to find lesser known artists. Our SiriusXM subscription has been nice as they tend to play songs that don’t get normal radio play around here, or if they do it’s generally weeks if not months before the local FM stations start airplay. I’ve always thought it would be fun to run my own radio show but I’m not really into podcasting, and well it’s hard to do for free. With that in mid I thought I could at least share some of the new tunes that are catching my attention. The most recent is Owl City from the album Ocean Eyes. The upbeat music belies the rather melancholy lyrics, but instead of being morose the song becomes wistful.
